Little Rev™ - Dianella revoluta 'DR5000' PP17,719

An amazing dwarf blue flax lily with compact, upright foliage. Little Rev's drought and salt tolerance make it an ideal selection for the "difficult" landscape.

Name: Little Rev
Plant Species: Dianella revoluta

General Description:

  • Clumping rhizomatous perennial; moderate spread
  • Extremely drought and heat (120+ ºF) tolerant
  • Evergreen in normal winters to 25 ºF (Zones 8-11). Hardy to Zone 7.
  • Medium growth rate. 1-1.5 ft. high x 1-2 ft. wide.

Position:

  • Grows well in full to filtered sunlight
  • Tolerates windy, salt laden positions
  • Best suited for free draining soils; avoid depressed areas with saturated soils; slightly acidic

Planting Density:

  • Best suited for full sun applications
  • Tolerates windy, salt laden positions, i.e. ocean front landscapes
  • Sandy to clayey loam soils; slightly acidic
  • Best suited for arid climates

Planting Density (mass planting landscapes):

  • For one gallon pots, plant on 12 to 18 inches centers
  • Three gallon pots should be planted on 24 inches centers

Care:

  • Do not bury the crown when planting. Burying the crown may lead to crown rot
  • Water as required to keep the plant healthy for the first 8 to 13 weeks; once established, irrigation may only be
necessary during extreme drought. Avoid overhead irrigation to reduce the possibility of leaf spot
  • Trimming is rarely required, but if needed, trim using a sharp implement to 6 in. above the ground. Avoid trimming in
drought conditions, or in the middle of summer.
  • Fertilize in spring and fall using a slow release fertilizer with a 3:1:3 blend ratio plus micronutrients (Iron)

Weed control:

As with all weed control, a proactive approach is usually the most effective. By increasing planting density and using pre emergent herbicides close to the time of planting, adequate control can be achieved with a minimal investment. For pre-emergent control use Ronstar and/or Rout at the labeled rate. If post-emergent control is needed, Fusilade can be used to selectively remove grass weeds. At this time the only known method for removing broadleaf weeds post emergence from Little Becca is a directed spray of Glyphosate (Roundup). When spot spraying with Glyphosate, ensure drift or overspray does not accidentally contact the Little Becca. Do not spot spray on windy days.

Disease and Insect Control:

Susceptible to leaf spot (Alternaria sp.). Little Rev is best suited for arid environments but will also thrive in more humid climates as long as it is planted in the right environment. In these areas, plant Little Rev in a free draining soils, i.e. slopes, raised beds, light soils with no overhead irrigation. If chemical treatment is necessary, a foliar application of a copper-based fungicide and/or chlorothalonyl will control the occurrence of leaf spot. No significant insect problems.
