Amber Velvet

Anigozanthos hybrid ‘Amber Velvet ™’ PP18,999

An evergreen clumping strap leafed perennial with foliage 12 to 16 inches tall.

This landscape hardy kangaroo paw hybrid from Australian breeder Keith Oliver has flowering stems 3 to 3 1/2 feet tall bearing large yellow to orange flowers in spring and early summer.

The durable characteristics of Amber Velvet come from its A. flavidus lineage. It has kept the cold hardiness and ink spot resistance but lost the large A. flavidus size in favor of an intermediate growth habbit. The smaller stature makes it more ideal for landscape plantings.

Attracts hummingbirds.

Plant Care and Cultural Notes

  • Plant in a sunny and open position in the garden in well drained soils. Irrigate regularly and fertilize in spring (not heavily and keep Phosphorus on the low side).

  • Fans only flower once and need to be cleaned out after the flowering period so remove the old leaves down to as low as possible at the end of a season.

  • Be careful not to damage the emerging young fans during pruning.

  • Hardy and evergreen to about 25 degrees F and will re-sprout after being knocked down by temperatures as low as 20 degrees F.
